After completing a successful season in Australia, former Gator point guard Scottie Wilbekin is moving on to play in Greece.
Wilbekin signed with AEK Athens for the Greek 1 pro league on Tuesday and will play with the team for the rest of their season.
Named the SEC’s player of the year in 2014, the 6-foot-2 Wilbekin helped lead UF to 30 straight wins last season and its fifth Final Four in school history. He went undrafted in the NBA draft, but had a strong first pro stint with the Cairns Taipans of Australia’s NBL League. Wilbekin led the Taipans to the NBL finals and earned all-second team league honors, averaging 15.2 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds.
There were rumblings that Wilbekin, a former standout at the The Rock in Gainesville, would return to the U.S. to play in the NBDL when his Australian season was over. But he opted to play in Greece instead. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Former Gator point guard Nick Calathes began his pro career in the Greek 1 league before returning to the U.S. last season to play in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.
