Embiid visiting UF this wekeend

Joel Embiid has spent most of his October weekends on a plane.

But the 6-foot-11 Embiid will be making his next official college basketball visit closer to home.

Embiid confirmed via Twitter that he’s taking his official visit to Florida this weekend. A 2013 prospect, Embiid is playing this season nearby at The Rock School in Gainesville.

Rivals.com rates Embiid a three-star prospect, but he is intriguing to several major programs throughout the country because of his size and potential upside. He grew up playing volleyball and has only played organized basketball for 18 months. Embiid has recently taken official visits to Kansas, Texas and Virginia.

I had a chance to watch Embiid at The Rock last month. Here’s a story I wrote about him for The Sun.

Embiid transferred to The Rock last season after playing sparingly at Montverde Academy in Clermont. Over the summer, Embiid played with current UF 2013 commitments Kasey Hill and Chris Walker for Team Florida Elite.

Florida is actively looking to add another big man to its 2013 class after Schyler Rimmer de-committed last month. Power forward Julius Randle, the No. 3 overall prospect in the Class of 2013, visited UF the weekend of the LSU game. And 6-foot-8 forward Jabari Parker, considered the top overall prospect in the 2013 class, has Florida in his final five with Duke, Michigan State, BYU and Stanford. Parker has yet to schedule his official visit to UF.
