Pelphrey recalls Mike Miller’s recruitment

John Pelphrey was among Florida assistant coachesĀ  heavily involved in Mike Miller’s recruitment in the late 1990s.

I asked Pelphrey whether he was at Miller’s doorstep in South Dakota at 12:01 a.m., the first minute of an open recruiting contact period. Or whether that story was somehow concocted and became urban legend.

With a smile, Pelphrey responded: “There was a lot of legendary things that took place.”

Florida’s aggressive recruiting helped the Gators land Miller, a five-star recruit many felt was headed to Kansas. Miller, now a forward with the Miami Heat, went on to become the centerpiece player in UF’s run to the 2000 NCAA finals.

“Somebody asked Mike Miller at his press conference at his high school, why did you choose Florida,” Pelphrey said. “And Mike said, very strong and convicted and without hesitation, 10 years from now. people will be asking, why not Florida.

“I don’t know outside of a small group of people anybody believed him. They thought, what’s this kid talking about, he’s just a high school kid. Very prophetic words. Because that next 10 years, a lot of things happened.”

  1. Mike Miller was the key to the foundation Billy now has in place. I am hopeful that John and Billy can land another Mike Miller in the next year or two so we can get back to being a factor in college basketball nationally.

The best part of the Miller saga was the tremendous whining and subsequent smear campaign by the “Dean Smith mafia” that accused Billy of everything short of murder for having the nerve to take a recruit away from Roy Williams at kansas. I find it interesting that Smith, Williams,Fogler, and others collaborated to destroy Billy without any tangible evidence to support their claims yet this is never mentioned by the media when slurping Roy as a coach.

  2. Grew up some in North Carolina and went to high school in Kansas. If I hadn’t gone to UF then I would have most likely gone to KU. Ever since that smear campaign I have disliked KU, UNC and Roy Williams (as well as Fogler).

I’m pretty sure Billy and UF has moved on though. I thought I remember Billy contacting Roy on how to deal with expectations after winning the 1st of the back to back titles.
