Freshman Will Yeguete was the pleasant surprise of the first weekend of practices. But here are some other notes:
— Patric Young and Vernon Macklin didn’t play on the floor together at the same time over the weekend. But Florida coach Billy Donovan said he’s open to the idea of playing Young at power forward with Macklin at center if Young picks things up quickly.
— More from Donovan on Young, now listed at 245 pounds: “He’s been really, really blessed, phyiscally. The biggest thing is you can see guys that look great physically, but don’t play great physically. You know, it’s the old look like Tarzan, plays like Jane. He plays like Tarzan. Phyiscally, he goes after it. He enjoys contact.”
— Donovan said he feels like “the defense is ahead of the offense” in practice right now.
— Donovan said he’s been impressed with the mental and physical toughness of 17-year old freshman point guard Scottie Wilbekin. Wilbekin, a Gainesville native, skipped his senior year of high school at The Rock to enroll at UF. “I was concerned about Nimrod (Tishman) a year ago, whether or not can this really happen, can he really develop into a guy that we can bring off the bench,” Donovan said of the departed Israeli point guard. “I really believe right now just physically and conditioning wise and being a point guard that (Scottie) is going to be able to contribute to our team.”
— Both Chandler Parsons and Kenny Boynton saw time at point guard, continuing a trend last year to take pressure off starting 5-foot-8 point guard Erving Walker.
— Donovan said his team will practice Tuesday and take Wednesday off. The first preseason game is Oct. 28 against Florida Tech.
