Media day thoughts

Some more media day musings:

— Florida’s incoming freshman class looks like the most athletic/physically developed since coach Billy Donovan’s vaunted 2004 class. Everyone knew how strong power forward Patric Young was, but forward Will Yeguete and Cody Larson look stronger than expected. Donovan said Casey Prather has “athletic ability on defense” similar to Corey Brewer. Even 17-year-old point guard Scottie Wilbekin looks stronger and physically capable of competing in the SEC.

— Sophomore guard Kenny Boynton said offseason work with a shooting coach has helped improve his stroke. “I am releasing it more in front of my head where as last year I never knew when it was going to go in, I was just shooting it,” Boynton said. “Now I know when it is optimal and how long it is going.  I think it is a better shot now.” Boynton shot 29.4 percent from 3-point range last season.

— It will be interesting to see how Donovan juggles the minutes in the frontcourt, or how much he will experiment with Vernon Macklin and Patric Young on the court at the same time. Macklin and Young could present physical mismatches up front for opposing defenses.

  1. Remember, Kevin, when there were lots of comments about how Donovan had lost his focus, lost his touch? All the sudden his past recruiting classes have grown into a capable team and his incoming class conjures memories of the fabled Oh-fours. We’ve gone from Speights three years ago to Macklin-Young-Tyus-Larson,-Murphy, and Yegeute, and to Parsons on the wing with a solid pair of guards. Boynton will become a star.
