Florida sophomore guard Kenny Boyton received a significant preseason honor Monday.
Boynton was named as one of 50 men’s college basketball players to the preseason Wooden Award watch list. The award is given each April to the top college basketball player in the country.
Boynton is one of just three Southeastern Conference players on the list, joining forward Trey Thompkins of Georgia and forward Jeffery Taylor of Vanderbilt.
Boynton averaged a team-high 14 points per game last season. The 6-foot-2 combo guard from Pompano Beach saved two of his biggest games in March, scoring 23 points in the SEC Tournament against Mississippi State and 27 points against BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Boynton’s 27 points tied a school record for points scored in an NCAA Tournament game.
Boynton spent the offseason working with a shooting coach in an effort to improve his shooting percentage. He drained 72 3-pointers, but was streaky, shooting 37.6 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from 3-point range.
