Touring the HOF

Had a chance to look around the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon.

One of the first thing I noticed is that it wasn’t strictly an NFL Hall of Fame. There were separate exhibits for the AFL, WFL and even the USFL. Jim Kelly’s Houston Gamblers’ jersey is prominently displayed. Somehow, though, I don’t think Herschel Walker’s 2,000-yard season with the New Jersey Generals will merit him any extra consideration for Hall induction.

The longest line were to watch the bronze head likenesses of the inductees. Of the bronzes, John Madden’s head was the biggest. I found out that creating the bronzes is about a seven-month process, and that the players first inspect a wax likeness of their face in February before it’s shipped to be created. They don’t see the bronzed result until tonight’s induction ceremony.

Most fans here are wearing Cowboys and 49ers jerseys in honor of Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice. But I’ve spotted fans with jerseys of nearly every NFL team and even saw a few Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos jerseys.

Florida coach Urban Meyer and a continent of Florida boosters/officials just arrived in Canton. They will be watching Smith’s induction tonight.
