Here’s some good news to pass along. Florida center Dwayne Schintzius has been declared cancer-free.
Schintzius, 41, was diagnosed with leukemia 10 months ago. He underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and was in a medically induced coma for 18 days.
The 7-foot-2 Schintzius still holds the UF record for blocked shots (272). He played at Florida from 1987-90 before quitting 11 games into his senior season due a personality clash with UF interim basketball coach Don DeVoe. Here’s a well-written story from the Tampa Tribune’s Joey Johnston that further chronicles Schintzius’ bout with cancer: http://tinyurl.com/33pg4he
It is great to hear the news that Dwayne is cancer free. I know it has been an ordeal for him and his family. The news made my day!
Good to learn of this news. Cancer in any form or fashion is ugly and for some one as young as Dwayne. GOD’s speed Dwayne!!
I thank and praise Shands for making me cancer free, too. Way to fight, Dwayne! Much tougher than any ballgame in any sport.
I watched Dwayne when I was a child as my parents were both gator grads and I knew him personally later in life in Tampa. I am so glad that he has beat this monster and look forward to see BIG D!
