Here’s some good news to pass along. Florida center Dwayne Schintzius has been declared cancer-free.

Schintzius, 41, was diagnosed with leukemia 10 months ago.  He underwent three rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and was in a medically induced coma for 18 days.

The 7-foot-2 Schintzius still holds the UF record for blocked shots (272). He played at Florida from 1987-90 before quitting 11 games into his senior season due a personality clash with UF interim basketball coach Don DeVoe.  Here’s a well-written story from the Tampa Tribune’s Joey Johnston that further chronicles Schintzius’ bout with cancer:  http://tinyurl.com/33pg4he

  1. I watched Dwayne when I was a child as my parents were both gator grads and I knew him personally later in life in Tampa. I am so glad that he has beat this monster and look forward to see BIG D!
