More on Calathes

Good job by our crack correspondent “All Day” Ray Fitzgerald in tracking down former Florida point guard Nick Calathes at UF’s volleyball game last Friday.

Apparently, $2 million per year goes a long way in paying for international flights.

Unfortunately, Calathes wasn’t forthcoming in his reasons why he left Florida after his sophomore season. Nick is a class kid, a hard worker and deserves every penny he gets overseas. But I just felt like he owed Gator Nation an explanation for the reason for his departure. In that sense, he gave Ray a nifty ball fake.

But I had a chance to talk to Nick’s father, John Calathes, a few weeks ago. John said his son was doing well. He also said he had some American players in Greece to hang out with, including former UF point guard Taurean Green (AEK Athens), former Orlando-area and Memphis point guard Darius Washington and his older brother, Pat Calathes.

“I think he realized it was his time,” John said of his son’s decision. “It was kind of like Taurean. He knew when it was his time and Nick, I think, felt the same way.”

Here’s a link to Green signing with AEK athens.
