Calathes’ future

Florida sophomore point guard Nick Calathes has picked up where he left off last season, leading the Gators in scoring and leading the Southeastern Conference in assists.

But it appears that Calathes’ draft stock is falling. Projected as a mid-to-late first round pick at the end of last season, Calathes is currently projected as the seventh pick in the second round on the mock draft web site draftxpress.com. Meanwhile, nbadraft.net doesn’t have Calathes getting selected in the first two rounds.

Calathes said that he was approached by a few professional teams to stay in Greece last summer, but chose to return to UF. Calathes’ older brother, Pat, is currently playing professionally in Greece.

“I got a couple of offers, but I told them it wasn’t the (right) situation,” Calathes said. “Coach (Billy) Donovan knew I’d be back here. They all knew.”

How much longer will Calathes stay? A chance to join incoming 2009-10 freshman guard Kenny Boynton would be intriguing. It would take some pressure off Calathes scoring the ball while keeping opposing defenses honest.

Asked about his future Monday, Calathes said: “At the end of my four years there’s always options and it’s great to have options. Right now I’m just thinking about right now.”
