A significant part of Florida basketball history was demolished into rubble when the RCA Dome was imploded Saturday morning.
Florida won its first national basketball title at the dome in Indianapolis in 2006. Six years earlier in 2000, Florida coach Billy Donovan led the Gators to the Final Four in the same building. Florida lost to Michigan State in the finals that year.
The Gators purchased the floors from both Final Four appearances, which hang on the wall of the court inside the school’s basketball practice facility.
“It will be disappointing to be in Indianapolis and being downtown and drive past there and not have that building there to be able to reflect back on even in 2000 when we didn’t win it but we played in that game, and being able to win it in 2006 there,” Donovan said. “Indianapolis has been a good city for the Gators and I’ll have to find a way to get a picture of that place and maybe hang it up since it’s no longer there.”
