The forgotten transfer

Credit reader Graham Wilson for pointing out a mistake I had in my story on Jai Lucas last Thursday. Florida has had nine transfers leave the program since 2003-04, the season I first started covering the team. I forgot Brandon Powell, the ex-Gator shooting guard who left for Marshall after his freshman season in 2006-07. Powell is eligible this season for his sophomore year after sitting out 2007-08 due to Division I transfer rules and had five points, two assists and a steal in Marshall’s opening exhibition win against Wheeling Jesuit.

So to review, here are the nine transfers

Mario Boggan, C — Oklahoma State
Rashid Al-Kaleem, G — American International University
Ryan Appleby, G — Washington
Mohamed Abukar, F — San Diego State
Jimmie Sutton, C — Florida Atlantic
David Huertas, G — Ole Miss
Brandon Powell, G — Marshall
Jonathan Mitchell, F — Rutgers
Jai Lucas, G — undecided

While it might seem like a high number, it’s common for players from Top 25 programs to transfer due to playing time issues. Kentucky, for example, has had seven transfers during the same time period.

Bernard Cote — Northwestern
Rekalin Sims — Fresno State
Adam Williams — Marshall
Shagari Alleyne — Manhattan
Derrick Jasper — UNLV
Alex Legion — Illinois
Morakinyo Williams — Duquense
