Florida suffered another blow to its practice depth over the weekend when freshman forward Allan Chaney suffered a sprained hand in practice Saturday afternoon.
With Vernon Macklin (ankle) and Adam Allen (knee) also out, the Gators practiced with 10 players Saturday afternoon.
I talked at length with freshman Erving Walker about his ability to get shots up despite his lack of height (5-foot-8) and his New York City roots for a feature story that will run later this week.
Walker is strong for his size but said before coming to college he didn’t lift weights “just naturally strong, I guess,” he said.
Both Nick Calathes and Dan Werner said some freshman jitters may have contributed to Florida’s lackluster performance in its first intra-squad scrimmage Friday at the O’Connell Center.
“Obviously, you get a little bit nervous your first time in the O’Dome,” Werner said. “Guys’ eyes were a little bit wider than usual. That’s the worst we’ve looked this season. Every other day in practice, we’ve gone pretty hard.”
Werner said he’s also playing the wing a little bit in practice, though most of his time has been spent at power forward. Calathes said Werner is playing as well as he’s seen him play in practice.
“He’s shooting the ball well and he doesn’t get tired at the end of practice like he did last year,” Calathes said.
