Highlights of Day 2 of SEC media days included Kentucky sophomore forward Patrick Patterson sporting an old-school hairdo (the ‘fro added at least a few inches on his 6-foot-9 frame) and Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie being a little more relaxed (we learned that he’s quite a pool shark.) Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy and his players didn’t make it because of mechanical problems that were detected before boarding their charter flight to Birmingham.
Florida coaches Billy Donovan and Amanda Butler did make it. Donovan was relaxed as well, talking to the SEC media throng about how he felt his team may have developed a little overconfidence following its late January win against Vanderbilt when the Commodores were ranked, how he wrestled with the dilemma of practicing hard or taking things easy in February because he only had nine scholarship players and about how his team didn’t come out with the right mindset against Alabama in the SEC Tournament after beating the Tide in the league’s season opener in early January.
By the way, an informal poll around the league coaches found one coach (Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl) declaring Donovan as the best coach in the league. Seven others were non-committal
I’ll have stories Friday about new LSU coach Trent Johnson and the plans under way in Tampa to host the 2009 SEC Tournament.
