A pair of former Florida assistants will coach against each other for the first time Sunday night.
But it won't be on the big stage that both envisioned.
Arkansas, coached by former Florida assistant John Pelphrey, will meet Virginia Commonwealth, coached by former Gator assistant Anthony Grant, in Sunday's consolation game off the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Both coaches had hopes to reach the finals, but VCU suffered a 69-63 loss to Miami in Friday's semifinals, while No. 18 Arkansas suffered a 67-51 loss to Providence.
The Arkansas loss was particularly tough on Pelphrey, who picked up his second technical in three days for violating the NCAA's new bench decorum rule. The Razorbacks committed 32 turnovers in a game that Pelphrey called "one of the most unenjoyable games" he's ever had as a head coach.
Both assistants worked under Florida coach Billy Donovan in a tree with branches that reach up to Rick Pitino and Hubie Brown.
