Goodbye Garrett. So long, Subway Jack.
Florida will have a new pair of walk-ons to start the 2007-08 basketball season.
Hudson Fricke, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard from Greenville, S.C., and Shane Payne, a 6-5, 180-pound guard from Weston, made the Florida team as non-scholarship players.
Fricke was a four-year starter at Southside Christian in Greenville, where he left as the school’s all-time leader in points and assists. A well-rounded athlete, Fricke also was the special teams MVP on Southside Christian’s football team.
Payne spent his final two years at Sagemont High, where he left as the school’s all-time leading scorer. He led Sagemont to a 25-3 record as a senior. As a junior, he was the most outstanding player at the Daytona Sunshine Classic tournament was the event’s 3-point champion.
Fricke and Payne replace walk-ons Garrett Tyler and Jack Berry, who decided to leave the team rather than play as seniors. Florida’s third walk-on last season, point guard Brett Swanson, graduated last spring.
Florida is looking for a third walk-on to fill out its bench, but this search is for interior players only (power forwards or centers). Those interested can contact Darren Hertz at the Florida basketball office at 352-375-4683 ext. 4200.
