Werner takes it in stride

Dan Werner is no stranger to coaching instability.

As a recruit, Werner initially signed a letter of intent with North Carolina State, only to de-commit after Herb Sednek left for Arizona State.

After his freshman year, it appeared Werner would face a coaching change again when Billy Donovan signed a contract last Friday with the Orlando Magic. But Donovan worked his way out his contract with the Magic to return to the bench at Florida.

Both situations had their share of anxious moments.

“In one aspect this was easier, because at N.C. State there wasn’t a coach there for a month and a half,” Werner said. “This situation, I was here, this was my coach, so that was probably a little harder to handle, but it was only a couple of days I was down.”

Werner said players began to get excited when news broke Sunday night that Donovan was considering changing his mind.

“On Thursday we were kinda upset, really disappointed, didn’t know what was going to happen,” Werner said. “On Sunday, we found out he might be coming back, We kind of got a little giddyap in our step. We’re definitely excited for next year.”
