Brandon Powell’s high school coach, Jerry Johnson, said he expected the 6-foot-3 freshman guard to return to Florida next season.
“He wants to be back,” Johnson said. “Unless it’s an academic situation or something, I expect him to come back. We talk on the phone almost every day and he hasn’t said anything about wanting to transfer.”
Johnson acknowledged that Powell was having difficulty with an English course this semester. Powell was kept home from Florida’s Feb. 26 game at Tennessee to focus on academics.
“If he buckles down and I expect he will, everything will be all right,”
Powell, from Mitchell High in Memphis, Tenn., appeared in 23 of Florida’s 40 games in his freshman season, averaging 1.6 points and 0.4 rebounds in limited playing time.
As one of just five scholarship players returning in 2007-08, Powell will have a chance to enhance his playing time next season.
“He understands his time will come,” Johnson said.
