Postseason format for South Florida public-school football released
The format for the tri-county football postseason is beginning to take shape.
Earlier this fall, the School District of Palm Beach County, along with Broward County public schools and most Miami-Dade county public schools opted out of the Florida High School Athletic Association state postseason series for fall sports.
Instead, the public schools in those counties will compete for a regional title, with football teams sorted into one of four classifications, starting at 8A and going down to 1A-4A.
There will also be two brackets: Gold Tier for the top teams, and Silver Tier.
In each classification across the two tiers, eight teams qualify for the playoffs, except for Class 1A-4A, which has seven teams total. Of those eight teams, two have be from Miami-Dade, two from Broward and two from Palm Beach County. The final two teams are at-large spots.
The classifications are as follows:
- 8A (gold and silver tiers)
- 7A (gold and silver tiers)
- 5A-6A (gold and silver tiers)
- 1A-4A (gold tier)
A college football-style playoff committee, made up of South Florida media members, will release weekly rankings and determine the postseason seeding.
The regular season for South Florida public schools concludes the week of Nov. 16-21. After a week off for Thanksgiving, the playoffs will begin with quarterfinals matchups the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 5, and semifinals are the following week.
Championship games in the Silver Tier are tentatively scheduled for Dec. 18 or Dec. 21 while Gold Tier championship games are set for either Dec 19 or Dec. 22.
Teams that lose in the quarterfinals or semifinals may play in a bowl game on Dec. 17.
In September, the athletics manager for The School District of Palm Beach County, Valerie Miyares, told the school board that teams would play up to six-regular season games followed by a bowl game.
Since then, the postseason format has changed.
