Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin announced Friday he'll be hiring Charlie Weis Jr. as the Rebels' next offensive coordinator

At 28, Weis has plenty of experience coaching at major programs. Like Kiffin, Weis is the son of a prominent coach who's been around football his whole life. And through the short time Weis has been a coordinator, he's seen plenty of ups and downs.

Here are five things to know about Ole Miss' new offensive coordinator.

Charlie Weis Jr., has worked with Lane Kiffin before

This won't be the first time Kiffin and Weis team up. From 2018-19, Weis was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Kiffin at Florida Atlantic.  Weis' first two years as an on-field coach saw immediate success.

In 2018, the Owls averaged 31.1 points per game and 478.8 yards per game, leading Conference USA in the latter category. In 2019, Florida Atlantic's offense led Conference USA in both categories, averaging 36.4 points and 448.6 yards per game on the way to an 11-3 record and a conference championship.

But even FAU wasn't the first time...

Prior to FAU, Kiffin and Weis already had a connection. Weis worked as an off-field offensive analyst at Alabama in 2015 and 2016 while Kiffin was the Crimson Tide's offensive coordinator.

Kiffin initially hired Weis as tight ends coach at FAU for the 2017 season but the pairing ended up being brief as Weis instead was hired as an offensive analyst for the Atlanta Falcons, brought over from Alabama by Steve Sarkisian.

Since then, things have been iffy

After Kiffin left FAU, Weis took the job as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at South Florida under former Clemson assistant Jeff Scott. The results haven't been pretty.

The Bulls are 3-18 over the past two seasons. Weis' offenses have averaged 23.1 and 23.2 points per game, both ranking worse than No. 100 in the FBS. This season the Bulls ranked in the bottom three in the American Athletic Conference in scoring, yards per game, passing yards per game, third down conversions and red zone conversions.

Charlie Weis Jr. comes from pedigree

Weis' father, Charlie Weis Sr., is an accomplished coach in his own right. Weis Sr. was an assistant coach on four Super Bowl winning teams, including the offensive coordinator for the first three championships the New England Patriots won with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

Following that successful run in the NFL, Weis Sr. moved to college and experienced middling success. He was the coach at Notre Dame from 2005-09, compiling a 35-27 record and two Top 25 finishes. From 2012-14 he worked as was the coach at Kansas, winning just six games.

Charlie Weis Jr. has a freaky skill

Speaking to CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd in 2018, Kiffin told a story about interviewing Weis for the Alabama job in 2015.

"We're at dinner and "I'm like, 'All right, I don't buy into this photographic memory stuff,' " Kiffin said. "I get my credit card and license and give them to him for five minutes. "I start asking questions about what was on there. He knew everything. The next day he still knew it."
