Growing up in Connecticut, Water's had no connection to Louisiana or LSU that led to his decision to play for the Tigers. Coach Will Wade's pitch to the point guard, however, was enough to get him to make the long trek south to Baton Rouge.
"Our pitch to Trey was, 'We need a point guard,'" Wade said in a Dec. 15, 2017, story for The Daily Advertiser. "I told him, 'If you want to do something special, come to a place where you can turn around a program that hasn't been winning.'"
Once he arrived at LSU, Waters was exposed to a culture he hadn't experienced in the northeast. What stood out the most: the food, specifically Parrain's seafood restaurant on Perkins Road.
"I had fried alligator and boudoin balls," Waters said. "That was something. Don't get that in New Haven."
