Gators continue strong MLB draft presence under O'Sullivan

The Florida Gators baseball program celebrated a solid Major League Baseball draft despite having no selections on the final day of the three-day event.

The Gators had seven players selected Monday — tied for the most of any NCAA program heading into Tuesday — led by outfielder Jud Fabian.

Fabian was selected Monday by the Boston Red Sox in Round 2 with the 40th pick. Fabian is the second highest Gator outfielder ever drafted — just seven picks behind Gator great Brad Wilkerson, who was selected 33rd overall by the Montreal Expos in 1998.

Fabian also is the highest Gator draft pick since third baseman Jonathan India was selected fifth overall by the Cincinnati Reds in 2018.

The Gators have now had 212 individuals selected since the draft started in 1965, including 16 first-round picks. India also is the last Gator to be selected in the opening round.

Catcher Mike Zunino — a two-time first-team All-American — remains the highest Gator ever drafted, going to the Seattle Mariners in 2012 with the third pick of the first round.

Zunino, now with the Tampa Bay Rays, was named a first-time American League All-Star this season and participated in Tuesday night's All-Star Game at Coors Field in Denver in a big way by belting a home run.

Right-handed pitchers Tommy Mace (Cleveland Indians, Round 2, Pick 69) and Christian Scott (NY Mets, Round 5, Pick 142) continue a stellar run of Gator pitchers selected in the first five rounds under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan.

Led by left-hander A.J. Puk’s selection to Oakland Athletics with the sixth overall pick in 2016, O’Sullivan has mentored 18 Gator pitchers drafted in the first five rounds, and 52 overall since 2008.

Seven of Gators’ 10 first-round selections under O’Sullivan have been pitchers.
