According to multiple media reports, Bobby Petrino received a seven-year extension at Arkansas. Not surprising because I heard he was hoping to use Florida speculation to get a bump at Arky.
I think it’s one of four now — Bob Stoops, Kevin Sumlin, Chris Petersen or Kyle Whittingham.
As a journalist, I’m relieved it’s not going to be Petrino. But it would have been fun to watch.
How on earth is Kevin Sumlin’s name get on this list? I’m sure that Gator fans would be “forgiving” if the team lost to UTEP too, huh?
He had that extension on his desk before Urban announced. The timing was meant to come out on our biggest recruiting weekend.
Pat:
I have read many of your articles and have been impressed with the quality of your work. However, I might have to give you a mulligan on this one.
It has been well documented by the media that Bobby Petrino and Arkansas have been in negotiations for a contract extension, with the process having started well before Urban Meyer resigned at Florida. http://arkansasnews.com/2010/12/01/football-is-contract-extension-coming-for-petrino/
Coach Petrino didn’t need the “Florida speculation” to “get a bump at Arky”. He received the contract extension and salary increase the old fashioned way – he earned it.
Perhaps you might want to check your source again to see if he truly has any inside knowledge in the process or is making a baseless attempt to toss more media negativity at Coach Petrino.
Good luck to Florida in finding a new coach. Will be interesting to see whether Jeremy Foley finds the next Urban Meyer or the next Ron Zook.
I’ll look forward to reading more of your good work.
Pat,
Why not Shane Matthews???
JEREMY, DON’T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE. CALL STEVE.
Forget Sumlin… he is no way qualifed to be the next HBC at UF.
Here are some stats of the guy I want to see get the job. I know it would be a bit of a project for Foley but the numbers just don”t lie.
The 2008 offense averaged 569.9 yards per game and was second nationally averaging 47.2 points per games. The offense was first in the country in third down conversion percentage (57.0 pct.) and yards per play (7.27 ypp) and was also fifth nationally in rushing offense (268.0) and ninth in passing offense (301.9 ypg).
As quarterbacks coach, instructed CT, who set a school single-season record with 22 touchdown passes in 2009. He threw for 2,612 yards, which was the third-best single-season total in school history, and his 198 completions also ranked third.
This guy is the real deal and would bring a lot of excitment to UF and send Bama coaches and fans screaming HELP!!
Yes it is….. Gus Malzahn. I know he would be a work in progress, but with Dreskle, and the roster our teams has he may win to NC back to back to back. Mr. Foley, step out of your comfort zone a little bit and go get this guy quick. He is or will be the hotest coach in the country in a few weeks.
How is Kerwin Bell at least not a candidate?
Sure hoping for Bob Stoops. Pat, any chance Mike Mullarkey is interested and would draw interest from Jeremy Foley?
To me Chris Peterson seems like the second coming of Urban
Meyer. I hope we get him and fast so we can get recruiting
back on track.
Glad too it is not Petrino. He is nothing more than a hired gun.
Pat, I love your columns, but you need to be faster on a story such as the HC position @ UF. The Gatorcountry message boards had this story @ 11:30 pm last night.
Petersen! Please please please
Stoops and Bell. Supposedly Bobby has a deadline of sometime this weekend to make up his mind and get things in order with Kewin already contacted to be the OC.
Why Bob “little game” Stoops. He whines like a puppy when he loses and blames everything on something external. ima hogaholic when did a contract mean anything to bobby petrino check with the falcons live by the sword die by the sword for arkansas fans
I swear that I saw Foley talking to a bag boy at Publix named Duane! I reported this yesterday! Can I get a job at the Sun now?
Dear Everyone – I am flattered that you think Kerwin should be Florida’s next 1. Head Coach 2. Offensive Coordinator. But I must ask…what is wrong with you people? He is the coach of JU, a Patriot League School. He coached high school a few years ago, and isn’t even qualified to be a postion coach at FIU. You people are delusional. He is a wonderful boy, and maybe one day he can work his way up to be considered for a job at UF…but please…Have you ever wondered why no school or team anywhere on the planet is trying to hire Kerwin? Just you 13 year olds on Gator message boards.
Signed, Kerwin’s Mother
Wow, will people stop talking about these off the wall suggestions like Kerwin Bell and Mike Mullarkey!! I can’t believe people seriously think Foley (and the big dollar Gator Boosters) want another Ron Zook situation. Give me a break, UF needs a top name EXPERIENCED head coach, not a “rising star” to use UF as his training ground. Please stop with the nonsense suggestions.
Jim Harbaugh please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peterson is a great fit. Tubberville would be awesome too
@ Doug
Laugh out loud!
Lets just hope Jeff Driskel likes who Foley chooses, time to think about the future, Driskel will help our Tebow hangover.
Driskell will have to beat out Jordan Reed first.
IGTBAG!
Ciao
Will Muschamp….not on anyone’s radar…..national or local medial. No one. That’s as amazing as the hire.
I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the comments here. I love Pat’s work although I do agree the anti-Arkansas/Petrino bias is a bit thick.
BUT, this Muschamp thing on top of the 7-5 season is really disapointing. Has Florida really fallen that far? It’s not Zook, but it’s close.
Get off Pat’s back, so what Petrino was already in talks over his contract. Ate we so naive to believe that the Florida vacancy didn’t help his cause to “get a bump”? All I have to say is MBM, Pat…
You were right on top of this one… Tebow had it before you…
Does anyone know what “IGTBAG” means?
NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ZOOK, Golfhog!
Muschamp, A GAINESVILLE HIGH GRAD, and COACH IN WAITING AT TEXAS!
And, last time I checked, TEXAS is even -when it comes to FANATICS!!!
I wish COACH MUSCHAMP ALL THE SUCCESS that he DESERVES!!!
I am happy to see ANY GAINESVILLE GUY -GONE GOOD- COME HOME and BRING UF back TO THE GLORY DAYS!!!
I would like to see COACH KERWIN BELL come, TOO… and be OUR OFFENSIVE CORDINATOR, BUT all in all, it was an A-TYPICAL Jeremy Foley choice….A YOUNG AND ENERGETIC, UP AND COMING COACH!!!
Definitly NOT a ‘SAFE and EASY” choice -which I APPLAUD!!!!
GO GATORS!!! GO MUSCHAMP!!! HERE WE GO!!!!
gatorgi70x7
This deal was originally announced locally Nov. 30th. Your another ill informed idiot parroting the BS that we have heard the last three years. By the way great hire. Muschamp? Really? You guys are already spinning this one too. Can’t wait for the opportunity to see Petrino vs. Muschamp the balance of power has shifted to the west and Florida is screwed. You Arrogant bastards forget you were a doormat before Spurrier got there.
“This isn’t based on any inside information, but I do know the way Jeremy Foley thinks.” Wow, Pat. Muschamp wasn’t even on your screen of the 12 names that you listed in your article “I Know Who The New UF Coach Is”. Does that mean that Jeremy Foley “wiffed” on the 4 “Solid Bets” and the 2 “Down the List” candidates? Or are you in need of another mulligan?????
Muschamp seems to be a likeable and capable coach, though a far cry from the “established” head coaches that you and most of the Gator faithful seemed to favor.
Certainly wish Coach Muschamp and the Gators the best of luck.
I WISH EVERYONE WOULD RELAX…JUS BECAUSE HE WASN’T A CANDIDATE LISTED IN THE PAPER…IT TOOK EVERYONE BY SURPRISE INCLUDING ME…I’M GUESSING SINCE HE WAS ALL BUT LOCKED UP…WITH TEXAS….IT’S MY UNDERSTANDING THERE WASN’T A BUY OUT TO GET HIM…
ONCE I HEARD…IT MADE PERFECT SENSE AND IM EXCITED….THAT’S JEREMY AT HIS FINEST….I KNOW ONLY TIME WILL TELL..AS I WAS HOPING FOR PETERSON….
I M REALLY HOPING HE’LL BRING KERWIN IN AS O.C., AND I’LL BE EXTREMELY HAPPY….BYE BYE ADAZIO PERIOD….
LET’S STAND BY WILL AND SUPPORT …REMEMBER THE GLASS IS MORE THAN HALF FULL, AND HE’S NOT A A…HOLE EITHER…
GO WILL, KERWIN. AND ?
Muschamp is going to do great, and he’s trying to get Kirby Smart. Our D will be better than it was when strong was here. I hope applewhite turns the OC job down we need another big name hopefully he goes after a more seasoned OC. After Dumbazzio Gator nation needs to see 30-50 points a game.
IGTBAG= IT’S GREAT TO BE A FLORIDA GATOR!!!!
Has anyone considered Mike Shannon as the offensive coordinator?
Excuse the foopah. I ment Randy Shannon.
