Ah, Hoover, Alabama.
When I first came to the Gainesville Sun 23 years ago, I didn’t know there was such a place. Now, it’s a twice-a-year destination.
The SEC baseball tournament and SEC Media Days. Both enjoyable and interesting. It’s no secret why they are here. The SEC office is located about 20 minutes from the ballpark and the Wynfrey Hotel, the site of Media Days.
But there is a chance we could be seeing the end of the tournament being here at Regions Park. Next year is the last year on the current contract and stadiums in Gwinett County north of Atlanta and Memphis have shown an interest in having the event.
But one of those places will have to make an unbelievable deal to get the tournament.
Hoover and Birmingham support this tournament. On Wednesday, it wasn’t surprising to see a near-full stadium for the first game because it was Auburn and Alabama. But the crowd for the second game was impressive as well as South Carolina and Ole Miss played.
My gut is that the tournament will be played here as it has been since it took an ill-advised detour to Columbus, Ga. The other offers are floated out there just to keep Hoover and Regions Park from getting too comfortable.
Still, the SEC is about money. It would take a lot of it to impress a league that recently gave its commissioner a $1 million bonus.
