I’ve been thinking it so I’m going to blog it and take the heat. I think TPC Sawgrass has the best three finishing holes in golf.
You can argue Pebble Beach. You can bring up Augusta National. I’ll take the last three holes at The Players.
Great risk/reward. Plenty of water. No. 18 is a bear. No. 17 is the best-known hole in all of golf. No. 16 has the potential for an eagle or a double.
A couple of years ago, I wrote a column trying to give those three holes a nickname. The best I could come up with was “The Bermuda Triangle” because of the bermuda grass. It hardly caught on. Before the tournament was over, former Tour commissioner Deane Beman suggested it be called “The Gauntlet.”
Lame.
So is mine.
I guess it’s never going to have a good nickname. Unless one of you comes up with it. And I steal it.
How about The Last Mile?
How about “The Dare”
Each hole dares you to go for something spectacular, especially if you’re chasing the lead at the end.
How bout “The Green Mile”? (Dead Man Walking!!)
