The yard in the River City

OK, this is my first time at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. I’ve walked by it a dozen times going to Florida-Georgia or the regional across the street but this is the first time inside. Florida and Florida State are playing and the crowd is hardly what it was two years ago when they started playing here on an annual basis.

Maybe it’s the threat of rain. Maybe it’s because both teams are good but not great. Maybe it’s because the premium ticket is $18.50.

I’m sorry, but $18.50 for college baseball in this economy. I don’t think so.

Anyway, the ball park is really nice. Many of you already know that because you’ve been here. But for a guy who covered a zillion games at now-pulverized Wolfson Park this ia a palace. Makes me want to come see some Double-A games.

Just for the record, I’d say it’s 60-40 Florida fans.
