The No. 11 Florida volleyball team swept FIU in three sets Friday night.
“As good as our offense was, this was about our defense — starting from our ability to put pressure on them behind the service line,” UF coach Mary Wise said.
In its second match win of the day, UF (8-3) came out as strong as ever, taking the first set 25-13. The team continued that momentum in the second frame, winning 25-12 and had complete control in the third set thanks to a 19-0 service run by Thayer Hall to clinch the 25-7 win.
Paige Hammons led the way with nine kills, tying her season-best mark. Taelor Kellum posted eight kills on .889 hitting percentage, with no errors. Thayer Hall added seven kills into the mix as well.
Hammons and Kellum both had great days defensively at the night as well, coming away with four blocks and six blocks, respectively.
Allie Monserez dished out 20 assists and Allie Gregory added 15 digs in the victory.
The Gators face Army West Point, which is 2-0 on the weekend and 5-7 on the season, at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Earlier Friday, Florida defeated Jacksonville in four sets Friday in the Honda of Gainesville Gators Invitational.
UF dropped the first set 25-22, before battling back to win the next three to move to 7-3 on the season. Florida had control of sets 2-4, winning them 25-15, 25-14 and 25-13, respectively.
Thayer Hall led all scorers with 11 points, five aces and three kills, followed by Paige Hammons, who notched nine kills in the match on a .450 hitting percentage.
Taelor Kellum was a force at the net, posting seven blocks, tying her career-high. The Gators held JU to a .042 hitting percentage, the third lowest total allowed by Florida this season.
