WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: TCU freshman transfers in
Danielle Rainey, a 5-foot-8 guard from Round Rock, Texas, has been admitted to the University of Florida for the spring semester with the intent of playing with the Gator women’s basketball team, coach Cameron Newbauer announced.
Rainey spent her freshman year at TCU, where she played in 11 games. She did not play during the fall semester with the Horned Frogs. Rainey will have three years of eligibility remaining at UF.
Rainey is the third newcomer to the Gators roster since Dec. 12, when freshman walk-on Stephanie Brower became a member of the squad. Gator soccer All-American Gabby Seiler then officially joined the team last week. Brower and Seiler are eligibly immediately.
Brower has played in two games since becoming a member of the Gators. During her prep days a Wiregrass Ranch (Fla.) High School, Brower compiled 1,493 points in 123 games, averaging 12.1 points during her four-year tenure. She also collected 8.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.1 steals per game.
Before she became a soccer star for the Gators, Seiler was a stellar two-sport athlete at McIntosh (Ga.) High School, where she broke the school’s all-time scoring record — boys and girls — and finished her career with more than 2,000 points. Interestingly, Newbauer recruited Seiler to play basketball while he was an assistant coach at Georgia, where Seiler signed but only to focus her talents in soccer.
GYMNASTICS: Foberg is SEC Freshman Gymnast of Week
One meet into her collegiate career and Florida’s Jazmyn Foberg is already collecting accolades. Foberg is the first Southeastern Conference Freshman Gymnast of the Week recipient for the 2018 season.
Foberg was runner-up in the all-around at 39.125 in Florida’s win last Friday at West Virginia. That total is the second highest among the nation’s freshmen and highest among SEC freshmen. Her total is the fifth-highest ever for a Gator freshman in a season opener.
The Gators host top-ranked LSU at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
SWIMMING: Dressels earn SEC weekly honors
Caeleb and Sherridon Dressel each garnered SEC Swimmer of the Week honors for their performances last weekend. Caeleb Dressel recorded six individual victories over the weekend and Sherridon Dressel followed closely with five of her own.
In a 209-91 win over the No. 19 Florida State, Caeleb Dressel came away with two individual wins, two relay wins and two B-cut times. Dressel notched victories in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay to secure the triumph over FSU, as well as picking up wins in the 50 free and 100 free. His time of 19.40 in the 50 free and 43.57 in the 100 free both qualify as NCAA B-cuts.
Sherridon Dressel notched four wins in the 184-116 defeat of Florida State as well. She also won the 50 free and 100 free, posting times of 23.18 and 50.16, respectively. The sophomore was a member of two winning relays, recording a 49.85 split in the 400 free relay and a 24.14 split in the 200 medley relay.
