UF soccer team falls at Washington

The No. 2 Florida soccer team fell 1-0 to Washington late Friday at the Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle.

Washington (3-2) jumped on the Gators (4-1) early in the match. Shannon Simon’s 15-yard shot curled under the crossbar to score at 1:30. It was the earliest goal scored on the Gators this season.

The Gators controlled the ball for much of the match, but could not generate the shots they had in previous matches. One of the best opportunities of Florida’s seven shots came in the 61st minute when Gabby Seiler was fouled just above the box. Mayra Pelayo took the shot, which was stopped at the corner by UW goalkeeper Sarah Shimer.

“Washington was really committed to defending, especially in the second half,” .Florida coach Becky Burleigh said. “They did a good job of keeping us out of dangerous areas. Give credit to the early finish they had – it was a good finish.”

The Gators continue Nike/Husky Invitational play against Portland (2-3) at 9 p.m. Sunday. The Pilots lost 1-0 to New Mexico in Friday’s early match.
