    COACHING

When your team looks ill-prepared in the season opener, when your team gets out-coached in the season opener, well it’s not a particularly good look. McElwain and his staff did not get the job done, a grand understatement, during an offseason in which they continually led us to believe just the opposite would occur. Bottom line is after 28 games, McElwain is 19-9, same mark as Will Muschamp in that time frame. This game was supposed to provide a barometer on the program and if it did, well no one should check the reading. In Year Three, with all but 14 scholarship players on the roster recruited by the current staff, this was no way to kick off 2017. Nothing changed on an offense that continually operates like one of the worst in the nation. This is all on McElwain, who brazenly spoke of all this supposed improvement behind closed doors throughout the preseason. Instead we got more of the same, a team unable to compete for 60 minutes with a top-shelf opponent. The heat has been turned up on McElwain to make sure the results match the expectations he spoon-feeds the masses. We’ll see if this staff is capable of not only handling adversity (it’s not solely on the players) but also making the necessary adjustments to field a competent offense.
