Dating back to last season, much has been made about the fact that Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy has not lost a game as a starting quarterback since he was in eighth grade. It’s an awesome record, but Florida quarterback John Brantley’s isn’t too shabby, either.
When asked how many games he’s lost as a starting quarterback, Brantley didn’t take long to answer.
“One,” he said.
His only defeat came in the last game of his high school career at Ocala Trinity Catholic. Trinity lost to powerhouse Pahokee in the state championship game.
“As a starter, I’ve only lost one, you could say,” he said.
Brantley had a chance to talk briefly with McElroy on the field after last December’s SEC Championship Game. The two have something else in common: both had to wait their turn before taking over as the starting quarterback at the collegiate level.
McElroy is now 18-0 as the Tide starter, while Brantley is 4-0 at UF.
“I congratulated him and wished him good luck,” Brantley said. “We both sat a couple of years and we know what that entails. I just have mutual respect for other quarterbacks and I just wished him the best of luck.”
Now, the two will face each other in the game of the year in the SEC.
