New Florida running backs coach Stan Drayton was named the top running back position coach hire by Rivals.com on Tuesday.
Drayton, who coached the running backs at Florida in Urban Meyer’s first three seasons at UF (2005-07), was hired by Meyer in January to replace Kenny Carter, who left to accept a job at Louisville with former UF defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. Drayton coached the running backs at Syracuse in 2008.
Rivals.com college football senior writer Tom Dienhart describes Drayton as a student of the game and one of the top recruiters in the southeast. Drayton also will serve as UF’s recruiting coordinator, replacing Billy Gonzales, who left to become the passing game coordinator at LSU.
Dayton burned (or at least damaged) his UF bridge when he unexpectedly left to take the same position at Tennessee following the 2007 season. He made some comments at the time that he wanted to coach running backs in a more conventional offense that featured an I-back. Whatever tension his comments generated between he and Meyer obviously was smoothed over during the hiring process in January.
