The Gators picked up a commitment Saturday from a highly coveted in-state prospect.
After previously intending to announce his commitment Friday night in his team’s season opener, which was called due to lightning, Miami Southridge defensive back Shawn Davis announced his verbal commitment to the Gators.

A three-star prospect according to 247Sports, Davis had narrowed his decision to Florida, Miami (Fl.), Alabama, Florida State and Tennessee.
The 5-foot-11 defensive back camped in Gainesville in July for Florida’s annual recruiting showcase, Friday Night Lights.
He left a considerable impression with multiple highlight-reel plays during Southridge’s 7-v-7 games, but announced he would push his commitment date back to the start of his senior season.

With Davis’ commitment, which is non-binding until he signs a national letter of intent, the Gators have 16 verbal commitments in the 2017 class.
