For Florida to sign two quarterbacks in the 2016 class, the Gators will likely need a flip.
Four-star QB Dillon Sterling-Cole, a top target for UF in recent months, pledged Tuesday to Arizona State.
With him off the board, the Gators don’t appear to have an uncommitted prospect they can pursue at the position.
UF offered and landed Kyle Trask over the weekend, and he informed the Sun that Florida wants another QB for 2016.
The Gators are expected to hold out for an elite signal caller.
K.J. Costello (Stanford), Jacob Eason (Georgia), Feleipe Franks (LSU) and Dwayne Haskins (Maryland) are top-100 recruits with UF offers, but only Franks and Haskins have stayed in contact with the staff since making their commitments. One or both could officially visit Florida this fall, but they seem solid in their pledges at this time.
Clemson commit Zerrick Cooper was in Gainesville for Friday Night Lights, but told the AJC he just rode along with others and is still “100 percent committed” to the Tigers.
The quarterback who may eventually become the best option for UF is Jack Allison of Palmetto. The Under Armour All-American solidified his pledge to Miami last month, but it had been up in the air prior to that.
If the Hurricanes struggle again this season and a couple Cane commits flip to Florida, namely Sam Bruce, it could affect Allison. Should Al Golden get fired, he’ll likely reopen his recruitment.
In any event, UF will continue to chase committed quarterbacks and may explore other options, such as a new prep target or a junior college QB. Forunately the Gators, they have Rivals100 member Jake Allen locked up for 2017 if their attempts to take a second 2016 QB fall through.
