Gardner, Joseph named top IMG performers

Florida had four verbal commitments compete in the IMG 7-on-7 national championship over the weekend.

A pair of them were defensive players, and both were named top performers on their side of the ball by

The recruiting service chose cornerback Chauncey Gardner, a Rivals100 member, as the No. 1 defensive player in the tournament. Gardner announced Monday he will in the Under Armour All-America Game.

Rivals: “Gardner had two interceptions and was his normal, active self. Gardner has an incredibly thick build (5-11, 190) that includes no bad weight. He also breaks incredibly well on the ball. His size and speed make him a versatile defensive back capable of playing corner or safety when need be. Gardner was as consistent a prospect as there was at the event.”

Gators linebacker commit Vosean Joseph came in at No. 12 out of 14 top performers selected by Rivals. He worked out with Randy Shannon earlier this month at UF camp.

Rivals: “Joseph is built to play in space. In a 7-on-7 environment, his football instincts really help set him apart from most linebackers. He can read and react very quickly and his speed helps him keep up with shifty running backs and slot receivers when needed. In an era where speedy, athletic playmakers are needed to help slow down up-tempo spread offenses, Joseph is an ideal fit.”

The other future Gators in the tournament were wide receivers Josh Hammond and Rick Wells. Hammond has been shining on the camp circuit, and Wells took part in Florida’s 7-on-7 tournament on June 5.

Both recruits reportedly made plays at IMG, but weren’t included on Rivals’ list of top offensive performers. Wells, however, had an impressive touchdown reception.
