Summers evaluates Rivals100 lineman

After taking a total of just six offensive linemen from 2010-2012, Florida is looking to load up at the position this year for the third consecutive recruiting cycle.

UF offensive line coach Mike Summers has been out on the road over the past week in search of potential prospects.

He paid a visit Monday to Southside (Ala.) High to evaluate Rivals100 member Tyler Carr.

“It was great to see him stop by,” he said of Summers. “We couldn’t really have a conversation because of NCAA rules, but we talk to each other on the phone a lot.

“He told me he’s watched my film several times. He likes my run blocking and how I keep my feet moving when I make contact.”

Summers’ evaluation is one Carr values because of his track record and lengthy coaching career.

“It’s good to know he thinks highly of me because he knows his stuff,” Carr said. “He has a ton of experience, which is something that’s really needed. He’s been at some premier places. He also has a lot of energy. So I really look forward to hearing from him again.”

Florida has yet to offer the 6-foot-6, 322-pounder, but he said Summers will return to his school to see him again. Carr, who is ranked the nation’s No. 4 offensive tackle and 30th overall by Rivals, isn’t bothered by the Gators not offering yet.

“School likes Florida can take their time with things like offers,” he said. “They’ve got the name behind them and the brand. They’re definitely going to be in the mix for me.”

Carr, an early enrollee, plans to reach his decision by October and wants to consider all of his options before releasing a list of favorites. In-state Auburn is currently considered the leader for him, but UF has a shot.

“A Florida offer would be huge for me,” Carr said. “I feel like they’re a premier school, and I definitely have some interest in them. If I could get down there for a visit and check them out, that would be great.

“Their tradition has always stood out to me. They’ve had some great seasons these past 10 years or so, and I think they’re going to have some good ones coming up.”

  1. Thanks for this story, Zach! Any relation to former UF star center Bil Carr, who later became our AD? Bill’s from Oensacola in the Oanhandle, not too far from this young man’s home, was an All American and Steve Spurrier’s road roommate. Just curious? Might help us land him.
