Marcus Lewis went into Saturday’s Nike Football Training Camp in Washington, D.C., with a goal in mind and a chip on his shoulder.
He took care of both by the end of the combine.
Florida’s newest commitment turned in an impressive performance and received an invite to The Opening, an annual All-Star summer camp held at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
UF receiver pledge Deondre Farrier has been invited as well.
“Being able to go to The Opening feels amazing,” Lewis said. “That was the goal. Some great players have competed there, so just being put in that elite class is big.”
But the event wasn’t just about an invite for Lewis. He had a point to prove to ESPN, which covers the Nike Football Training Camps exclusively.
Lewis is a Rivals100 member and a four-star recruit on 247Sports and Scout, but the four-letter network currently has him unrated with three stars next to his name.
“That’s going to change,” Lewis said. “I talked to those (ESPN) guys today, and they hadn’t been able to see me before. The higher-up guys told me I did a really good job and looked great out there.
“I wanted to show them that I could play and I’m not just a ranking or a guy that’s going to Florida. I can actually compete with the best.”
The coaches at the NFTC also liked what they saw from the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder.
“They just told me I’m a physical guy,” he said, “and I’ll do great things on the next level and beyond. They told me I have a bright future.”
“I like that they came to check up on me just a week after I committed,” Lewis said. “They congratulated me on my decision and told me they’re really happy that I’m a Gator.”
Congratulations to Marcus Lewis (the_numero_uno) of IMG Academy on earning his invite to The Opening. https://t.co/CEm8FsE2SM
