Tevon Coney took a two-day trip to Gainesville over the weekend to visit Florida and watch a pair of spring practices.
The Palm Beach Gardens linebacker called UF his ‘dream school’ when he was offered by the Gators in late January.
One of his family members feels the same way.
“I’m a Gator man, been that way all my life,” said his father, Tim Coney. “No matter where you go, anywhere in the country, there’s a Gator somewhere. And that means a lot.
“In life it isn’t always what you know, but who you know. The University of Florida can take you places and give you opportunities in life that you can only imagine.”
It starts in the classroom, Coney said, and UF fits the academic criteria his son is looking for in a college.
“It’s a great school to him academically,” he said. “Tevon will do real well in that area of his life. He’s a kid that wants to get a great education, and you know Florida definitely offers that.”
Gators coach Will Muschamp impressed both Coney and his son on their trip.
“What we really enjoyed about it was the coaching staff,” he said. “Coach Muschamp being the type of guy that he is, great players want to play under him. That’s why they have No. 1 defense in the nation.”
The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder is rated a four-star recruit by Rivals and 247Sports and also holds offers from Auburn, Clemson, Miami and Ohio State, among others. He claims no leader at this time and doesn’t have a timetable on his decision.
Coney plans to bring both of his parents on his next visit to UF, which will be for the spring game April 12.
