Florida hosted four official visitors over the weekend, and none were more important than Lorenzo Carter.
The consensus five-star defensive end from Norcross (Ga.) is one of the top targets for UF coach Will Muschamp and his staff.
Carter has not returned several calls and texts from The Sun since his trip concluded, but Kipp Adams of 247Sports caught up with him at his high school on Tuesday.
“I have to give Florida an A+ right now,” Carter told Adams. “My first official — they set the bar high like I was expecting. … It was just fun all around.”
The 6-foot-5, 234-pounder was impressed with the defensive unit’s performance, particularly the pair of former five-star defensive ends.
“I love the way their defense played,” he said. “They had Ronald Powell and Dante Fowler flying off the edges, and Dante actually did a great job. I would have a chance to play with him if I went there, so that’s a plus.”
Another former five-star for Florida, Vernon Hargreaves III, was Carter’s host on his visit. The freshman cornerback told him seeing the field early is possible with the Gators.
“He gets playing time — he starts,” Carter said. “He just let me know it’s (about) hard work. If you get there and work hard, they’ll give you a chance to play.”
He was accompanied on the trip by his parents, who are very involved in his college decision and emphasize being a student first and foremost. UF met their academic standards according to Carter.
“They thought highly of Florida,” he said. “You really have to try hard to fail if you go there. There is so much support and hands on you. We liked that.”
Carter has official visits planned to Georgia and Alabama after his senior season. He also wants to return to Gainesville for either the Florida State game or the football banquet weekend.
The Gators were publicly his No. 1 school in the summer before he decided against naming leaders. They appear to have the edge again, but Carter won’t be making his commitment until signing day.
“I know it’s going to be a long process,” he said. “It was my first official. It’s way earlier than my other two that I’m going to take for sure, and I just have to take it slow. I really like Florida, so these other schools gotta work hard. Georgia and Bama, they’re up there with Florida. So it’s going to be a long journey.”
