Covington (La.) Garrald McDowell visited Florida for the first time Saturday to take part in the Will Muschamp Football Camp.

The ESPN150 member and Under Armour All-American worked out with UF defensive line coach Brad Lawing and also took a tour of the campus.

“My best visit by far,” McDowell said of the trip. “It was a great experience checking out the sites and meeting the coaching staff, especially coach Lawing. He told me I have good fundamentals and I’m a coachable player. He really loved me.”

The 6-foot-2, 253-pounder said Lawing believes he can be a disruptive interior lineman and weigh up to 285 in college.

McDowell was offered by the Gators on April 11 and tight ends coach Derek Lewis stopped by his school during the evaluation period. Florida’s recruiting efforts have yielded results.

“They’re my leader,” he said. “I love everything about the school. They have good coaches and they put a lot of players in the NFL. And I’m a Florida fan. I liked Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes and the Pouncey brothers growing up.”

McDowell listed Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Oklahoma as his other favorites and hopes to visit all four schools before making his decision at the end of the summer.

  1. Sounds like a guy taking seriously his recruitment, is bright and articulate, and, hopefully, this time next year a genuine Florida Gator and UF freshman. Welcome to the best SEC member school, a great football program on the rise, and to an education that can become a foundation for the rest of your life, Garrald!

  2. C’mon Joe. Just because dude lives here in Louisiana doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s automatically going to sighn with ls-who. Kids may want to get away from home to experience college. Court Jester Lester can’t get ’em all & contrary to popular belief all of them don’t want to go there. He sounds like the exact type of guy Big Willie needs to shore up the D-line. I was in a restaurant here yesterday & there was a couple wearing Gator gear & he was being chided somewhat by the idiot ls-who fan. It’s like anyone who isn’t wearing the home colors is an outcast, especially if those colors are orange & blue or crimson & white. I assured my Gator brethren that it was cool. All you gotta say is 14-6 & they shut up. Go Gators!!!
