Anzalone makes a suprise stop in Gainesville

Notre Dame linebacker commit Alex Anzalone (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) made a surprise visit to UF, one of his finalists, for Friday Night Lights.

The ESPN150 member came down to the Sunshine State for Gridiron Kings in Lake Buena Vista this weekend and hitched a ride with Tampa Hillsborough defensive end Jordan Sherit to participate in Florida’s showcase.

Anzalone said Saturday the trip to Gainesville had nothing to do with recruiting and he wasn’t pursued by any coaches or commits.

He just wanted to compete and enjoy himself.

“I had a lot of fun,” said Anzalone, who is solid with the Irish. “I got to hang out with the Florida boys and see what they’re all about, got some quick tips from the coaches there and just had a good time.”

Anzalone also lived out a childhood dream.

“I grew up a Florida fan,” he said. “Even last night it was a cool experience for me to play in The Swamp. I always wanted to do that when I was a kid. It was hard to pass it up.”

The intensity of the workout was Anzalone’s highlight of the night.

“I think the position drills and the agility drills they had in the beginning (were the best),” Anzalone said. “They were pretty intense. They give you a good workout.”

Florida’s coaching staff was one of the main reasons Anzalone considered the Gators and he had high praise for UF coach Will Muschamp, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and linebackers coach D.J. Durkin.

“They’re good guys,” Anzalone said. “I know coach Quinn has NFL experience, coach Muschamp has NFL experience, coach Durkin has coached schools all across the country. So they all have experience that they can teach me to refine my technique.”

  1. FNL is done and everyone is wondering what is up with recruits seriously considering Florida…..and the first story is on a recruit that is committed to Notre Dame and has no interest in the Gators. Makes perfect sense to me.

    • TampaGator,
I would like to give you the latest on Marcell Harris and DeMarcus Walker but they declined to do interviews with me after Friday Night Lights. Anzalone was the next best recruit in attendance and dozens of people asked me to find out about his visit. I broke the Riles story yesterday, got more video interviews than any other website and will get several more (notably Harris) at Gridiron Kings this weekend. Plus we have two additional writers whose stories from last night will be going up over the next few days. Content is coming, I assure you.

  2. Zack….my first post was not abusive or off task. Why keep me from posting? I was just wondering why the Sun would lead with a story about a Notre Dame commit. No insult intended. But you can censor me if you want…..but without cause.

  3. Zack…..with Riles and Sherit committing and being DEs….I would guess that means the D. Walker is headed to the Tide……don’t you think. It would be good to ask him if how the Riles and Sherit commitments impact his situation with the Gators. I know the Tide fans think he is “lock” to join Bama.

    • TampaGator,
I didn’t keep you from posting or censor your comments. Our blog system randomly selects comments that have to be “approved” before they show up, but yours appeared as soon as you made them.
As for your question, the commitments of Sherit and Riles aren’t going to keep Walker from coming to Florida. Sherit is a weakside DE and Riles, who is a strongside DE like Walker, could move inside once he gets on campus (as could Walker). And he is not a lock to Alabama. I’m told by several, several sources that the Gators have the edge right now.

  4. I missed the Jordan Sherit commit, we are rolling and this is a great class as it stands. If it gets any better I’m going to compliment EMK for something. Welcome aboard “kid” and keep it coming because EMK can use some love!!!! GO GATORS!!!!

  5. I told you guys VH3 and Jordan S. are attached at the hip. It wouldn’t be long. Glad he and Riles finally came aboard. Walker and Harris? Harris is flirting with Texas and FSU. I feel he is still battling with himself about coming to the same school his dad attended. Bet you anything on that one. Walker Loved the whole “live like a player week” at Bama a little to much and came here hoping a day at UF would sway him back again. I don’t think it was nearly enough time for him to make it an even race again. We need Harris more than Walker. If you disagree then let me know were to find another 6′-3″ 200+ NFL body safety. Still going to be a great monster class no matter what happens.

  6. Walker and Riles, particularly Walker, could move inside eventually and i’m sure they know that. If he ends up at Bama it shouldn’t have alot to do with the other 2 committing first. But I agree with Harris being #1 right now

  7. Zach I want to express my appreciation for the job you do too! There are some who post on this board that like to whine and complain, but rarely post anything positive. Just consider the source, we do and most of us just ignore their dribble. Go Gators!

  8. I still think Walker is the biggest need. We just picked up the most college ready CB since Patterson, onto an already strong secondary , which is probably our teams strongest unit. SEC is a line of scrimmage league and if Walker is who we think he is – he could be a game changer. I’ll take Walker right now over anyone else left on the board outside of Tunsil.

  9. What kind of a supposed “media” source censors people? I have been censored before on here too. Its laughable. If somebody tried to censor the Sun, they would cry like a bunch of sissies but they have no problem doing it to readers who are critical of the Suns work. Amazing.

  10. Zach, no need to defend yourself. Some people are overly critical of the job anyone would do, but don’t forget to realize that they are constantly on this blog, so undoubtedly you are doing something right. I’m just stoked that we are about to have the return of the mailbag now that FNL is over. Keep up the good work, and keep us informed of any information that should happen to come your way!

  11. I’m tired of reading the comments of people on here who just want to see their words in print. Go to a forum, please.

Zach-Please give us your predictions of how the Gators will fill the remaining spots in this class.

  12. Zach,
I only recently stumbled upon your blog within the last year or two. I love it. Your writings are more often than not the most entertaining and informative on here. I would love to see more articles from you elsewhere in the sports section. You, more often than not, provide articles about football and football only and you do it without trying to plug your personal endeavors or whats playing on your ipod this week into it. I love reading about football, no matter what team it’s about. It’s just a special bonus that it’s mostly about the florida gators! I love this article and if we can find a way to sway this recruit it would be awesome!!!!

  13. Regarding the offer on Chris Thompson: I believe I had previously read thru this blog that the team was turning down faster recievers (than Thompson) to target to focus on those with greater height. Does this reflect a change in philosophy or a does it reflect that we are likely out of the running for other targets?

  14. I have never been negative towards Zach…no reason to be. I just did not understand….at the time….the lead story about a Notre Dame solid commit. But Zack explained….and I appreciated his honest response. So get off that.

Zack….Tunsil talked with Scout.com today but I have no access to that site. Do you know what he talked about. A bunch of Dawg and Bama fans are saying that Florida is no longer being considered by Tunsil and are saying so on another site. I have not read that anywhere else. Did he say something on Scout about that. I hope not. We could use his services along with Humphries and Dunker in the future.

  15. TampaGator, If UF offers Kenny Lacy we are done with Tunsil. Muschamp learned from last year. He is a move on next man up kind of guy anyway. That’s why we took GHS WR Thompson. I hope Walker comes to UF but I still have my concerns with him and Harris. I Want Badly to keep our brother Harris in the family.
    Doug,
Zach told us its Walker, Harris, and Tunsil/OL(K.Lacy)

  16. Zach we all appreciate your column and all the hard work you do in keeping us informed. Thompson’s commitment was surprising, I had never heard of him. Is Bailey still committed? Whether Tunsil commits or not, I feel Muschamp is looking at someone else. Are we waiting on Marcell Harris to commit or is he waiting for an offer? Go Gators.
