News & Notes: Mini Camp 1 and Session 1

The first half of the Will Muschamp Football Camp is in the books and the Gators helped themselves tremendously with the 2013 and 2014 prospects they hosted.

Here is some news and notes that came out of Mini Camp 1 and Session 1:

* Updates on RB Josh Mercer, DE Antonio Riles, DE Jordan Sherit, S Marcell Harris and 2014 LB Kain Daub. Each prospect has a story link attached to their name.

* The 2013 commitments that came to campus were running back Adam Lane, receiver Ahmad Fulwood, offensive lineman Rod Johnson and defensive tackle Caleb Brantley, who says he is now solid and will be back in Gainesville from Thursday to Sunday. The commitments planning to visit this weekend are running back Kelvin Taylor, receivers Rodney Adams and Fulwood, linebacker James Hearns and safeties Keanu Neal and Nick Washington.

* ESPN300 quarterback Max Staver (Brentwood, Tenn./Academy) threw in Saturday’s mini camp and surpassed the other targets at the position to become the top priority. Afterward he said Florida and Mississippi State were his top two schools, but the Gators took the lead Monday after the Bulldogs landed a quarterback. Staver is expected to be offered by UF sometime this week.

* ESPN150 defensive tackle Greg Gilmore (Hope Mills,N.C./South View) came down to Florida for the weekend with his mother. LSU has always led for the four-star prospect and still did following the trip, but Gilmore said his mom favors UF because of the travel convenience. She is able to take a direct flight from nearby Charlotte, N.C., to Gainesville. “My mom likes Florida,” Gilmore told ESPN. “She wants me to go there. I’m not going to lie.”

* ESPN150 defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) visited Florida on Saturday and called the Gators his top school after the trip. He plans to commit in July between UF, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

* Three-star linebacker Shaun McGee (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) spent the weekend in Gainesville and named Florida his leader after he earned an offer from Muschamp. He now has a total of 10 offers, including Alabama, Michigan State and North Carolina.

* Georgia cornerback commit Shaq Wiggins (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) participated in Florida’s mini camp. The ESPN150 member said Wednesday that he has re-opened his recruitment and will check out other schools. The Gators are currently second to UGA.

* Offensive coordinator Brent Pease offered 2014 quarterback Will Grier (Davidson, N.C./Davidson Day) following his work out Wednesday. It was his first SEC offer.

* The Gators received a visit from massive 2014 offensive lineman Orlando Brown Jr. (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) on Saturday. Florida is among his early favorites, but Georgia is his leader at this time.

* 2014 offensive lineman Mason Cole (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) worked out for the first day of Session 1. Florida is one of nine offers for him.

* Rielly Gibbons, a top in-state offensive lineman for the 2014 class, took part Monday’s camp. He said the coaches were impressed with what he showed and an offer could come soon. The St. Petersburg Catholic prospect has 13 offers thus far, including Tennessee, Rutgers and West Virginia.

* 2014 safety Quincy Wilson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./University School of Nova) camped at UF on Tuesday and will return for Friday Night Lights on July 27. His top two schools are Florida and Auburn and he also has offers from Clemson, LSU, Maryland, Purdue and West Virginia.

* Florida offered 2015 defensive tackle Cece Jefferson (Glen St. Mary, Fla./Baker County) after Saturday’s mini camp.

  1. Staver is as good as ours if we want him. We will offer as soon as Pease is done evaluating the camp QBs and it’s almost a given that none will be better than Staver.
Offer to McGee maybe means we’re done with Anzalone (Penn St, ND?). Not sure if McGee is a pure LB or Buck as he’s kind of an unknown, but earned a Bama offer this month so he could be a sleeper.

  2. Bronson—-2014—–Commits to Gators: Can someone with a little common sense explain to me what that means? A ‘commitment’ is a commitment when there is some ‘mutual’ obligation’. That obligation may have the force of law or it may be simply voluntary, an expression of preference at a given moment in time. I realize that at every university there are fanatics who cannot wait for the latest ‘commitment’. That said rather than call it a ‘commitment’ why not try, ‘—a preference of a 17 year old at a given moment in time which has absolutely no force in law and can be changed by either party at any moment’. Now, that would be quality journalism!!

  3. EMK, what is your issue? Why do you bother going on a recruiting website if you don’t want to read recruiting news. You sound like a dejected pompous a–. Go back and watch “The Price is Right” or something and quit bothering those of us who know what to expect from a recruiting blog, RECRUITING NEWS!!!!!!!

  4. @gatorchomp – The Henry ship has sailed. Muschamp has made it clear he sees him on defense and having 3 LB in the mix and Anzalone still out there and higher up on the board – no way Henry will be in this class. 6 – 8 spots left with the entire summer left and a lot of bigger fish still out there – time to be picky.

  5. GaToRcHomP,
He, DH, de-committed yesterday because of Sabans and his visit to bama. He grew up a gator fan but that is far from his mind. I think he goes to Bama or Clemson, or recommits to UGA. Glad to hear about the 2014 WR coming on board. I would like to see M.Staver commit as well as some 2014 OL. Thanks Zack for the recruiting news love.

  6. EMK funny. I can’t wait for him to teach the rest of us knuckleheads that he’s being fahseeshus — uh, fahshesuz — oh, whatever, it’s too big of a word for me. But I’ll bet he knows!

  7. emk .. probably one of those kids in high school who cant afford to go to the swamp unless his uncle joe’s mail man cant go who then hands the tix to his brother ray who then hands the tix to emk provided he washes his car for the next month plus the cash… oh well, cant blame the runt for trying…

  8. Scooterp,
Before I read J’s post I was about to tell you to hold on because this is a kid that have multiple skill sets and he would be two athletes for one scholly.
Now, lets get back to this Saban guy in Bama, How in the “Hell” can he sign 30-40 recruits (it appears) per season. Do these guys know something or someone that allows them this special privilege?

EMK, I told you you would become that target. But I think you are handling yourself well. GO GATORS!!!

  9. Thanks a lot emk. After your wonderful diatribe I realize that there is no hope left for me. But before I grab a dictionary to look up how to spell “angry old geezer”, could you please explain to me, in that flowery prose you so elegantly grace us with, as to why you bother coming on this website?

  10. EMK, I’ve bit my tongue for too long. I was taught, if you have nothing positive to say, keep your grumpy old trap shut! I pity the poor people who have to spend their time with such a negative nelly.
