There’s nothing slow about Daytona, Fla., Mainland defensive end Leonard Williams, but when it comes to recruiting he’s taking it slow and steady.
Williams, who stands 6-foot-5 and 254 pounds, has more than 30 verbal scholarship offers. He maintains he has no leader and has not narrowed his list of schools. He plans to travel around the country this summer in the hopes of finding the close-knit atmosphere he is looking for.
“I’m gonna wait it out ’til the end,” he said.
Last Sunday, Williams showed off at the Under Armour Tampa combine and shared top honors for linemen with his friend Dauron Williams, one of the state’s top offensive guards.
The two had a good battle in one-on-one drills, but otherwise Leonard Williams had his way with the other participants. He used a quick first step and a burst of power to easily shed blockers.
Williams clearly looks the part of a big-time prospect. He’s loaded with raw athleticism and has a frame that can support a lot more weight. He’s rated a four-star athlete by Scout and Rivals, garnering a spot in Rivals’ top 100 players in the Class of 2012.
It’s no surprise he has the attention of the Florida coaching staff, as he has talked to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn off and on.
“He said he wants me to be a big part of the team,” Williams said. “He said he was really looking forward to meeting me.”
Florida coaches did just that when they visited for Mainland’s spring game in mid-May. Williams says he plans to unofficially visit Florida this summer and continue to build on a relationship that began with a Junior Day visit in February when he got to drop in on the Gators’ spring practice.
“When I was growing up my favorite team was the Gators,” he said. “They’re always going to be my favorite team but I don’t think it’s going to have any factor in where I’m going to go.
“Most likely I would want to stay down in the South, but I have no problem leaving.”
Looks like MUschamp and the gang are going to be relentless on the recruiting trail, cant wait for 2011 to get started and get back on top!!!!!!GO GATORS!!!!!!!!!!!!
He sounds like he has a level head on him. I can’t wait for the season to begin!!!!!!!!!
Gators can have a D-line that will be the envy of the SEC and be dominant for years to come IF everything falls into place !
This guy seems to have the measurables to be a big timer.
How can you be a Gator fan growing up and not commit to UF as soon as you are able? I may be bias!
Don
Gator fan doesn’t mean Gator fit. Travon Van is prof of it being more LOI.
This guy is a must get! With the defensive coaches that we have now he should want to be a Gator!
