Easley feels at home

Dominique Easley was one of the biggest recruiting surprises of the year. The Staten Island, N.Y., Curtis defensive lineman was one of those Florida leans over the summer, only to eventually commit to Penn State. Fast forward to the Under Armour All-America Game in early January and Easley completely shocked the recruiting world by committing to Florida. He then promptly went out and garnered MVP honors, no doubt exciting all of Gator Nation.

When I spoke to Easley Sunday afternoon, I asked him about what happened between he and Florida over the summer. He politely said that “a couple of things happened” when he tried to commit and then he declined to comment on what happened in July. The bottom line is that Easley has found where he wants to be and he’s been thinking about it for more than just the past month.

“I always wanted to be a Gator and now I’m where my home is,” Easley said.

Easley said being on campus for the first time since July felt “great.” He had been waiting to get back to Gainesville and said that Florida feels like a home away from home.

Easley said he was always comfortable with Florida, even when he was committed to Penn State. Urban Meyer’s health issues never really affected him, especially when offensive coordinator Steve Addazio was named interim coach. Easley said Meyer and Addazio are so similar that he would have been happy with either as his head coach. Though he does believe Meyer will be back for the 2010 season.

Easley said he’ll make the move from defensive end to tackle when he gets on campus this summer and wants to gain five more pounds to get to an even 280. Easley showed great speed off the edge in the Under Armour game, but said he wants to get even faster for when me makes the move inside.

ESPN ranks Easley as the third-best player in the country, while Rivals.com ranks him at No. 7. As a junior, Easley had 51 tackles, 10 sacks and forced two fumbles.

  1. I would be more relieved (and relaxed) once Mack Brown, Easley, Sharrif Floyd and Ronald Powell are faxed in to play at UF on Natl Signing Day. I hope they stick with their commitments. This looks to be the best, loaded, talented class I have seen since the Tebow class.
I also hope that we get a few more surprise commitments to add to this stellar class. Go Gators!!!

  2. All aboard, whoo, whooo! Welcome Mr. Easley and if the old adage ‘defense wins championships’ is true, the look forward to many more National Championships in Gainesville. You won’t regret your decision Mr. Easley!
