Notre Dame didn’t just lose its football coach Tuesday, it also lost one of its prized recruits. With Charlie Weis being fired and the state of the program in shambles, Aurora, Colo., Grandview defensive end Chris Martin told me via text message Tuesday night that he has decommitted from the Irish and has narrowed his short list of schools down to Florida, California, USC and Oklahoma. He’s no longer doing interviews until national signing day.
Things appeared to be going south (get it? going South) for Notre Dame when a source informed me Martin was “all Gator” following Florida’s 37-10 win over rival Florida State last Saturday. I asked Martin if he had in fact decommitted and then recommitted to the Gators and he said “No.” Word was that his parents were still very high on Notre Dame and wanted him to go home and talk with them about his future. Looks like the Irish don’t mean much at all anymore.
Martin is a five-star prospect by Rivals.com and is the No. 2 strongside defensive end in the country. He’s already taken an official to Florida and Oklahoma and is set to visit Cal. on Dec. 11. Nothing is official on a trip to USC.
