Rivals.com ranked Alabama and Florida one and three respectively for their Classes of 2008. The Tide signed a total of 32 prospects; three of them five-star prospects and 19 four-star recruits. UF rounded out last year’s class with 22 prospects, four five-star prospects and 12 four-star recruits.
Here’s a list of last year’s commitments from both sides and the impacts each one has had.
Will Hill ATH 5-star, Jersey City, NJ – Struggled early and played mostly special teams. Is now a key player on UF’s defense at nickel corner and as a reserve at safety. He currently has 42 total tackles and two interceptions.
Omar Hunter DT 5-star, Buford, GA – Never lived up to the Tebow-like hype coming out of high school because of injuries and is redshirting.
Carl Moore WR 5-star, junior college Roseville, CA – Was supposed to be a deep threat like Andre Caldwell before him, but has been very limited in the offense. He only has 13 catches for 181 yards and no touchdowns.
Matt Patchan OL 5-star, Seffner, FL – Moved to defensive line because of depth issues and has shown a lot of promise, recording seven tackles and 1.5 sacks on the interior. He was also a key player in punt block. He will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Brendan Beal LB 4-star, Bethlehem, PA – Never really adapted well to the speed of the game in spring practice and then tore his ACL and has missed the entire regular season.
Janoris Jenkins DB 4-star, Pahokee, FL – Made his first career start opposite sophomore Joe Haden at cornerback in Week 5 against Mississippi. He has played like one of the top corners in the SEC and has 33 tackles, three interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble.
Adrian Bushell ATH 4-star, DeSoto, TX – Delayed summer practices because of NCAA clearinghouse issues and has yet to see any game action this year and will redshirt.
Dee Finley DB 4-star, Auburn, AL – Will be counted in the 2009 class because he did not qualify academically and is currently enrolled at Milford Prep in New York. He’s expected to enroll at UF in January.
William Green LB 4-star, Hoover, AL – Has played both linebacker and defensive end as a reserve and has been a key component on special teams. Recorded a blocked punt against Kentucky and has seven tackles and a sack this season.
Omarius Hines WR 4-star, Corsicana, TX – Has yet to see any action and will redshirt.
T.J. Lawrence WR 4-star, Lakeland, FL – Was moved to safety during summer workouts, but an injury set him back and he was moved back to receiver. Has yet to see action and will redshirt.
Lerentee McCray LB 4-star, Dunnellon, FL – Has quietly come on as an outstanding special teams player. He’s played in six games and has recorded five tackles.
Jeremy Brown DB 4-star, Orlando, FL – Showed signs of promise during the spring, but a back injury ended his season before it started and he will redshirt.
Jeff Demps RB 4-star, Groveland, FL – Has been one of the biggest home-run threats out of the backfield in the country. He’s third on team with 529 rushing yards on 55 carries and has six touchdowns. He’s also has two blocked punts.
Frankie Hammond Jr. WR 4-star, Hallandale, FL – Was talked about by Meyer over summer as one of the rising freshmen, but fell behind and has yet to see game action and will redshirt.
Earl Okine DE 4-star, Gainesville, FL – Struggled in spring and summer practices to develop and will redshirt.
Troy Epps DT 3-star JUCO, Coffeyville, KS – Played in five games this year at nose tackle and recorded two tackles. He tore his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.
T.J. Pridemore LB 3-star, Buford, GA – Converted into a fullback and has dressed for the Hawaii, Miami and LSU games. Saw action on goal-line formations against Hawaii.
Sam Robey OL 3-star, Louisville, KY – Tore his ACL this summer and will redshirt.
David Young OL 3-star, Edwardsville, IL – Saw action against Hawaii, but has yet to play since.
Byran Jones DT 2-star, Jacksonville, FL – Has yet to see action and will redshirt.
Caleb Sturgis K 2-star, Saint Augustine, FL – Came in as the expected place-kicker this season, but was inconsistent in spring and summer practices, and Jonathan Phillips won the job. He handles kickoff duty and is averaging 63.4 yards per kick with 11 touchbacks.
Julio Jones WR 5-star, Foley, AL – Fifth in the SEC in receiving yards with 723 yards and has four touchdowns. Has definitely lived up to the hype as last year’s best high school receiver.
Tyler Love OL 5-star, Mountain Brook, AL – Has played and started only one game this season. He is currently battling a stress fracture.
Burton Scott ATH 5-star, Prichard, AL – Has played in nine games at receiver, but has only caught two passes for seven yards.
Mark Barron ATH 4-star, Mobile, AL – As a defensive back he has 17 tackles and has 1.5 sacks this season. Also has one punt return for 1 yard.
Jerrell Harris LB 4-star, Gadsden, AL – Has played in eight games and has recorded three tackles.
Barrett Jones OL 4-star, Memphis, TN – Has played in two games this season.
Alonzo Lawrence DB 4-star, Lucedale, MS – Has yet to see game action.
Kerry Murphy DT 4-star, Chatham, VA – Didn’t qualify academically, but appealed his status and could enroll at Alabama in January.
Star Jackson QB 4-star, Lake Worth, FL – Listed as the third-team quarterback and has yet to play.
Melvin Ray WR 4-star, Tallahassee, FL – Opted to play professional baseball instead.
Courtney Upshaw LB 4-star, Eufaula, AL – Has played in 11 games this season and has 21 total tackles (2.5 for loss).
Michael Williams DE 4-star, Reform, AL – Listed as both a tight end and defensive end.
Devonta Bolton ATH 4-star, Norcross, GA – Didn’t qualify academically.
John Michael Boswell OL 4-star, Northport, AL – Has played in eight straight games.
Robby Green DB 4-star, River Ridge, LA – Played in 10 games this season as a reserve, but has only recorded five tackles this year.
Glenn Harbin DE 4-star, Mobile, AL – Has yet to see game action.
Don’ta Hightower LB 4-star, Lewisburg, TN – Has made an immediate impact by starting 11 games at the weakside linebacker position and is fourth on the team with 59 tackles and has two fumble recoveries and fumble forced.
Destin Hood WR 4-star, Mobile, AL – Opted for professional baseball instead.
Mark Ingram ATH 4-star, Flint, MI – Is sixth in the SEC with 681 rushing yards and broke the school record for rushing touchdowns with 11 this year. He is currently 54 attempts away from breaking Terry Grant’s freshman record of 180 rushing attempts in a single season.
Chris Jordan ATH 4-star, Brentwood, TN – In eight games as a reserve linebacker he has recorded two tackles.
Robert Lester DB 4-star, Foley, AL – Didn’t qualify academically.
Brandon Lewis DE 4-star, Pleasant Grove, AL – Didn’t qualify academically.
Undra Billingsley DE 3-star, Birmingham, AL – Has yet to see game action.
Marcel Dareus DT 3-star, Birmingham, AL – Has played in six games this year and has 4 tackles.
Ivan Matchett RB 3-star, Mobile, AL – Has yet to see game action.
Jermaine Preyear RB 3-star, Mobile, AL – Bothered by a shoulder injury sustained in high school, he has greyshirted and will enroll in January.
Damion Square DT 3-star, Houston, TX – Has yet to see game action and will redshirt.
Terrence Cody DT 3-star, Perkinston, MS – Is one of the biggest linemen in the country at just under 400 pounds. Has played and started in 10 games this season and has 20 tackles (4.5 for loss) and 0.5 sacks. He also has two fumble recoveries and has forced one.
Chris Jackson WR 3-star, McDonough, GA – Has played in all 12 games mostly on special teams, recording six tackles.
Brad Smelley QB 3-star, Tuscaloosa, AL – Switched to tight end and has six catches for 91 yards, including a long of 37.
Wesley Neighbors DB 2-star, Huntsville, AL – Has yet to see game action.
Corey Smith K 2-star, Bunker Hill, WV – As the second-string place-kicker, he is 0-1 on the year in field goal kicking.
