Fact or Fiction: Will SEC teams play fewer than 10 football games in 2020?

Our Fact or Faction segments have been doing well on our website. We have decided to continue with them right up until the SEC makes its decision about whether or not to play games at the end of July. So here we go with Pat Dooley and Robbie Andreu of the Gainesville Sun embracing the debate:

Item 1

Florida, as well as the other 13 SEC teams, will play fewer than 10 football games in 2020.

Andreu: Here’s my biggest concern about the fate of this football season. I’m afraid it might get started, maybe a few weeks later than scheduled, and we’ll get four or five games in and then we’ll have to shut it down due to an outbreak. If that happens, everybody is going to be playing fewer than 10. A month ago, I would have said everyone would be playing their full 12-game schedule. Now, maybe 10, but … FACT.

Dooley: Well I guess we will know in a couple of weeks. If the SEC decides to play only conference games, it will likely add the ninth game to keep the four SEC-ACC rivalries intact. Does it try to then set up other games against the ACC for the teams that want to play nine? And does the league try to play more conference games to satisfy its TV partners. My gut is that you are going to see more than nine games scheduled. Let’s hope they play them all. FICTION.

Item 2

If there are games, the perfect pair to play the parts of Mr. Two Bits at the first game with fans would be Shayne Edge and Judd Davis.

Andreu: This would make perfect sense, kicking off the season with two of the greatest kickers in school history. And they’re not just any punter or place-kicker. These are our guys, so to speak, local guys from the area who are still around and certainly would love to take on the Mr. Two Bits role. So, let’s do this. Let’s kickoff the season with the kickers. FACT.

Dooley: It’s surprising that they haven’t asked these two guys already. They spent a lot of time entertaining the media when they were players and certainly created wonderful legacies as players. They could recreate the “Nestea Challenge” they did after an extra point in the SEC title game in ’94 that got Gene Stallings so mad. After all we have been through, we could all use a little chuckle. FACT.

Item 3

The SEC will have six teams in the preseason AP Top 25 when it is released in August and it will include Tennessee.

Andreu: I’m not an AP voter, but if I had a vote I would give serious consideration to putting the Vols just inside the Top 25, probably at 24 or 25. They finished the season strong and carry a lot of momentum into 2020. But I don’t see them getting into the preseason poll. Maybe after the first week they’ll find their way in. As for six SEC schools being in the preseason poll? Absolutely. They would be Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Auburn and Texas A&M. Maybe even in that order. FICTION.

Dooley: I think the league will have six teams ranked and I know I have six teams on the ballot I plan to send in Aug. 1. But one of them is not Tennessee. The Vols have to earn it by winning some big games, not by finishing strong against mediocre teams. I have these teams ranked in the preseason — Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M and Auburn. Tennessee might be one of those teams that really struggles if we have a conference-only schedule. FICTION.
