Less than 24 hours after Florida’s 2021 class took a hit with Clinton Burton, Jr.’s decision to flip to Boston College. Burton, the Gators wasted little time in making up for the loss.
Donovan McMillon, a 6-foot-2 defensive back out of Canonsburg (Pa.) with more than 50 scholarship offers, verbally committed to the Gators on Saturday night in a commitment video posted to his Instagram account. The rising prospect had recently named a top-five of Florida, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Oregon and Oklahoma.
McMillon is ranked a three-star prospect in the 247Sports composite, but he’s considered the No. 7 safety prospect in the 2021 class by 247Sports’ ranking.
Although he wasn’t able to take an official visit to UF prior to committing, that didn’t stop the hard-hitting safety from taking a road trip to several of the programs atop his list.
McMillon and his family took unofficial visits throughout June to UF, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech. The Hokies were considered a player in his recruitment until the very end due to proximity –– Blacksburg is just a five-hour drive from his home –– as well as strong relationships with head coach Justin Fuente and defensive coordinator Justin Hamilton.
In the end, however, those factors didn’t prevent McMillon from becoming the 20th member of Florida’s 2021 class.
