Dan Mullen did not take long to fill the vacancy on his coaching staff, hiring a veteran coach he is very familiar with.
Tim Brewster, the assistant head coach and tight ends coach at North Carolina, is joining Mullen’s staff, according to multiple reports Thursday. He replaces tight ends coach Larry Scott, who left last weekend to become the head coach at Howard University.
Brewster, the former head coach at Minnesota, was on Mullen’s coaching staff (wide receivers) at Mississippi State in 2012-13. He’s a highly respected coach who has a reputation for being an elite recruiter.
Brewster was Minnesota’s head coach from 2007 to 2010, when he was 15-30 before getting fired. He’s been an assistant coach at North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi State, Florida State Texas A&M and Purdue. He’s also coached tight ends for two NFL teams — the Chargers (2002-04) and Broncos (2005-06).
Brewster recently received a raise at UNC after Jimbo Fisher tried to lure him to Texas A&M. At the time, Tar Heels’ coach Mack Brown had this to say about Brewster: “He is a tireless worker, he’s a tremendous tight end coach, and I think he may be the best recruiter in the country.”
Welcome to UF Coach Brewster!
It’s all coming together rather nicely. I really liked that accolade from Mac Brown, who happens to be a great recruiter himself.
I am so totally pleased at HC Mullen’s decision to offer this job to Coach Brewster, as well as his decision to accept. SAY IT’S GREAT, TO BE, A FLORIDA GATOR!!!
Apparently he is a top notch recruiter according to the “experts” on the Rivals site. Go Gators!
