[Updated: 9-2-19, 8:06 p.m.] NEW YORK — It didn’t take long for another NFL team to try its luck with former UF defensive end Jachai Polite. The Seattle Seahawks added Polite to its practice squad Monday.

The New York Jets quickly cut ties with third-round pick Polite, a pass rusher from Florida who struggled to make an impact during training camp.

Polite was among the last draft class selected by previous general manager Mike Maccagnan, who was fired a few weeks after the draft and replaced by Joe Douglas.

New York has been looking to upgrade its edge rush, but Polite routinely worked with the third-team defense and appeared buried on the depth chart. He was considered a potential first-rounder before poor performances in workouts and interviews leading up to the draft caused his stock to drop.

Jets coach Adam Gase would neither confirm nor deny published reports that Polite had been fined a total of around $100,000 for repeated violations of team policy.

“We’re about the guys that do it the way that we need it done,” Gase said. “Best guys are going to make the team.”

Other Gators making moves Saturday and Sunday as NFL teams cut to the 53-man roster:

Jets: Released wide receiver Deonte Thompson

Bills: Placed linebacker Vosean Joseph on injured reserved

Broncos: Cut tight end Moral Stephens and offensive lineman Chaz Green

Raiders: Cut running back Mack Brown

Giants: Cut punter Johnny Townsend

Redskins: Cut defensive tackle Khairi Clark

Bears: Cut defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard, who was picked up Sunday by the Cardinals.

Lions: Cut defensive back Teez Tabor, and running back Brandon Powell. The Falcons signed Powell to their practice squad Sunday.

Panthers: Cut linebacker/defensive end Bryan Cox Jr., who was signed to the team’s practice squad Sunday.

Cardinals: Placed guard Max Garcia on the physically unable to perform list

49ers: Cut defensive back Marcell Harris and wide receiver Chris Thompson. The team signed Harris to the practice squad Sunday.

Some of these players may be invited back for practice squads or signed by other teams as they settle on their rosters.

Of note is former UF kicker Eddy Pineiro making the Bears roster as their starting kicker.

  1. Something strange in the neighborhood. After Fla.beat the pants off Mich. in 2018 Peach Bowl, Polite was a first-round pick by all expert draft analysts. 3 months later, he slips to 3rd round and gets picked by the train wreck known as the NY Jets. I cannot think of WORSE team to take you. Now, he is cut? WTH? Something is going on we don’t know about. Anyone got a clue? Don’t guess or opinionate. Please tell us what you know or have heard from reliable sources.

    • He showed up at the combine fat, and then he gave the scouts and coaches all kinds of attitude during interviews. Later, he apologized and said he misunderstood what they were asking, but the damage had been done. I would say many of his behaviors suggest that he really isn’t all that excited about playing in the NFL. He certainly hasn’t shown through his work ethic that he wants to be one of the very few who get to play in the Big Show.

      • All of the above is very possible Jaws. It is a little stunning though. He came on board as barely a 3-star — one of those situations where having a UF offer might have been what got him his third star — and worked his tail off to be in first-round consideration as a junior. And then his career seems to be completely unraveling.

He started off with a chip on his shoulder but I wonder if the notoriety he gained at UF got to his head. It caused his subpar combine performance and he either didn’t learn his lesson there and continued the subpar behavior or went into self-pity mode. Either way, someone with influence in his life needs to give him a good kick. Congrats, you have the talent, you have arrived, now keep doing what you did to get here or it will all be snatched away.

  2. I guess some people just lose their drive. I would have thought Polite had the capacity to push himself as is required in the NFL. In a few years time he will come to regret his decisions and behavior. As ye sow, so shall ye reap.

    • Heck yeah they did, they literally have no downside. The signed a guy who was in first-round consideration a year ago to their practice squad. The worst that happens is they have to cut him as well. Or he can be the answer to continuing to reload that elite but aging defense.
